Two braces, two jobs

Which one you need depends on what the knee is doing, not on preference. We work that out at the assessment.

Evoke — for arthritis

An unloader brace, designed to shift weight away from the worn side of the knee. OssKin describes it as the lightest rigid custom knee brace available, at around half a pound, with a low-profile frame that fits under trousers. Read OssKin's page on the Evoke.

Provoke — for ligaments

A functional brace built to protect a deficient or healing ligament — ACL, PCL, MCL or LCL — through all three planes of movement, without restricting normal knee motion. Read OssKin's page on the Provoke.

Why 3D printed

A brace only works where it sits correctly. One that does not match the shape of your leg gives support where you do not need it and leaves it out where you do — and it tends to slide, which is the usual reason a brace ends up in a cupboard.

Rather than being measured with a tape and built to the nearest size, an OssKin brace starts from a 3D scan of your leg. The frame is then modelled to that scan and printed, so it makes contact along the whole surface instead of at a few points. Both braces use OssKin's Asymmotion hinge, which is designed to follow the knee's own rotation rather than working as a simple pivot.

The braces are printed in Canada from an aerospace-grade nylon. You choose the colour of the thigh and shin sections.

Fitting is done here as part of an assessment of the knee, not in isolation. A brace is one part of the plan; the strength work that goes with it is the other.

Cost and coverage

Bracing is quoted per person, since the price depends on which brace suits the knee and the activity it needs to handle.

When a brace helps

Knee arthritis

An unloader shifts weight away from the worn side of the joint. It does not reverse arthritis, but it can reduce pain and let you stay active for longer.

Ligament injuries

After an ACL or PCL injury, a functional brace limits the movement the ligament would normally control — useful returning to activity while the knee rebuilds, and protecting it afterwards.

Meniscus tears

Bracing can take load off the injured side of the joint, which often reduces the pain that comes with weight-bearing and twisting.

Returning to sport

If you have an old knee injury and the knee feels unreliable under load or when changing direction, a brace can give enough confidence to train properly again.

Before or instead of surgery

Some people brace while waiting for surgery. Others use one to stay active and put a decision off. Either is a reasonable conversation to have at your assessment.
